Grooming Update For North Fork |
|
Tuesday, July 8, 2008
Get out and enjoy the trails of summer. The county commissioners are reviewing a master trails plan which will be a fine addition to the pathway network in Weber County. The winter trails are part of the master plan. A pathway around Ogden Valley in the foothills is part of the plan. It is an exciting time for all users of pathways.
As the plans get approval there will be plenty of work available to make the trails a reality. Check with Ogden Valley Pathways or stay tuned here for more info.
Thanks for your support!

Ogden Nordic is a non-profit organization dedicated to the sport of Nordic Skiing in the greater Ogden Area. Originally founded as a junior racing club in 1997, our mission expanded in 2002 when we started our grooming efforts in Weber County's North-fork Park. At the same time, we became a formal chapter of The Utah Nordic Alliance (TUNA), and the "Official" grooming team for the Utah Special Olympics.
Since we recognize the mutual benefit that trails and pathways offer the community over all 4 seasons, we actively work to support Ogden Valley Pathways and Weber Pathways. The development, preservation, and maintenance of Non-Motorized trails for multiple user groups such as skiers, hikers, bikers, and horsemen benefit our members all year long and enable pleasant winter gliding in our scenic mountains. Please remember to share the trail with these other groups.

Our mission is to promote the sport of cross country skiing in the Ogden Area through information, facilitation, coaching, events, and social gatherings.
Our primary goal continues to be facilitation of a good Nordic Venue for the Ogden Area. Currently we are focused on the creation of a "Notable" venue in Weber County's North-fork Park. This park is well suited for great skiing from November to April and has 20 km of trails. Situated on the North side of Ben Lomand mountain at an elevation of 6,000 feet, this park holds great snow and is quite scenic. By working with Weber County, our dedicated sponsors, the pathways organizations, Swanson's Environmental Center and The Utah Nordic Alliance, we are creating a sustainable venue where the gliding, the grooming, and over all experience is great all season long.

The Ogden Nordic Grooming Team, headed for the 6th year by Dave Jenkins (Eden), consists of 24 people dedicated to the idea that good grooming makes for great skiing. Some of the team has been here all 6 years while others come and go as their schedules allow. We volunteer twice a month to make the ski trails in North Fork Park practically perfect. We groom mostly in the dark, after dusk or before dawn, so the snow has time to set up and provide an optimal surface for gliding. A typical grooming run takes 3 hours or more. We groom the nights of Sun. Tues. Thurs. Friday and Sat. so the skiing is ready first thing the next morning.
